Kurtijah Ross wins CSEC Regional Award for Creative and Expressive Arts

Kurtijah Ross is currently in LVI at Naparima Girls’ High School and is pursuing Performing Arts, specifically Drama. For the May-June 2022 CSEC examinations, Kurtijah studied twelve (12) subjects and received eleven (11) distinctions and one (1) grade two. Additionally, she placed 6th on the Merit list for 2022 CSEC Theatre Arts-Drama. As a result of her exceptional performance, she recently received the Regional Award for The Most Outstanding Performance for Creative and Expressive Arts along with the NEO Award for the Most Outstanding CSEC Performance.

Not only has Kurtijah been working hard academically towards her goal of becoming an actress and establishing her own theater company, she has also taken her academic understanding and knowledge of the Creative Arts to the practical domain as she has recently written two drama production scripts and directed them. The first script was written in November 2022 in which she directed a cast from Naparima Girls’ High School to perform in the Secondary Schools’ Drama Festival 2022 Competition. In this competition, she received “The Zeno Constance Award for Most Original Script” for her script entitled, “The Whisper that Breaks My Shell”.

Furthermore, Kurtijah continues to hone her craft as she has been working under the actress, Penelope Spencer, at Necessary Arts for the past five years and has taken part in many plays and ads. Notably, her recent performance in Rodell Cumberbatch’s 2023 Kids So Amazing, Carnival Festival event at Five Islands and her role in an ad for Digicel’s Loop App in 2021.

With these achievements and activities, Kurtijah aims to keep attaining great successes along her journey in the arts. She leaves a message as she recalls Proverbs 14:23, “Put your words into practice, your “to do’s” that you write out. Carry them out. No matter how tasking it may seem to achieve your goal, you can do it because nothing is impossible. Do not let anything or one limit you from the possible.”
