With Us Not For Us

The 21st of March is commemorated globally as World Down Syndrome Day, to raise awareness about those those affected with this genetic disorder. Down Syndrome is caused by the existence of a portion of a full third chromosome 21, hence the designation of March 21st to celebrate those affected by the disorder.

The NGHS Non Nobis Club, as part of their ongoing campaign to educate the Naparima Girls’ High School community, “shone their light” on the characteristics and challenges of those diagnosed with Down Syndrome. The girls of the club thoughtfully put together a display of posters for the school’s community to read. Their aim was to inform and educate the wider school population about Down Syndrome. Some of the club’s senior students also created an informative digital flyer, featuring key details on the genetic disorder.

Their efforts were well-received by the school’s populace as students, teachers and auxiliary staff alike took a moment from their busy day to read the informative posters. The NGHS Non Nobis Club wishes to continue working hard in their endeavours, given the positive feedback on this display, as the club pursues its overarching goal of educating our school community.

On behalf of the NGHS Non Nobis Club, we express our support for all affected with Down Syndrome, as we aim to help them create a world that is “with us not for us.”
