Make Your Point Debate

Naparima Girls’ High School has placed third in the highly competitive, Make Your Point National Debate Competition

Now in its third season, the “Make Your Point Debate” is one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most prestigious debating platforms for secondary school students. Mandated by Her Excellency Christine Kangaloo, the President of Trinidad and Tobago, this season highlighted critical societal issues and encouraged students from Forms 4 to 6 to engage in meaningful discourse. The competition, hosted by Guardian Media limited and CNC 3, was launched on the 27th of September 2024, at the President’s House.

This year’s debates tackled a range of thought-provoking topics such as whether the state adequately protects the rights of children, should citizens have easier access to guns given the current crime situation, whether parents should also be punished for their children’s misdeeds, the necessity of colonial-era monuments for teaching history, and whether poverty is the primary cause of crime today. The competition aimed not only to develop students’ debating and critical thinking skills but also to foster awareness of pressing issues affecting society.

Representing Naparima Girls’ High School were Shamia Charles, Isabel Lee Sing, Maikhailanne Dyer, and Rianne Boodoosingh. The team was mentored by Mrs. Bachoo, the patron teacher of the school’s debate club. Over the course of the competition, the team demonstrated remarkable dedication, engaging in rigorous preparation for each round. This included in-depth research, analysing assigned topics from various perspectives, and anticipating counterarguments. Practice debates were essential in refining their speeches, sharpening their delivery, and ensuring cohesion among team members.

The team also participated in interviews and interacted with other schools at each stage of the competition thereby fostering positive relationships and mutual respect among participants. Through their hard work and perseverance, they advanced to the semi-finals, ultimately placing third overall in this national event. Additionally, Shamia Charles, the team’s opening speaker, received the Rising Starlet Award, recognizing her exceptional talent and potential as a debater.

The CNC3 Make Your Point National Debate Competition provided an invaluable opportunity for students to voice their opinions on important societal issues while building critical skills. Naparima Girls’ High School’s team embodied excellence and determination, leaving a lasting impact on this year’s competition. Their journey stands as a testament to the power of teamwork, preparation, and passion. We wish the N.G.H.S. Debate team congratulations on their accomplishments!
