On Saturday 28th November 2020, the Naparima Girls’ High School Astronomy Club rocketed into the Top 5 schools of the Trinidad and Tobago Astronomy Club’s (TTAC) 2020 National Astronomy Quiz. The TTAC executive’s ingenuity was showcased under these unusual
circumstances in the competition hosted via Zoom. Despite the challenges of no face to face discussions and strategies, the NGHS Astro team was named the night’s Delta Star (4th place) out of 15 schools, just missing the podium by 3 points.
Team members began preparing for the quiz one month ago, and the teamwork and dedication of mostly new members to the Astronomy Club must be applauded. Adrenaline and excitement ran high as NGHS representatives: Sunella Ramnath (Captain), Sariyah Boodhram (Vice Captain), Sashi Dookeran, Fariah Karim, Sarah Leonard, Chloe Ramcharan, Anusha Saha and Alyssa Sonoo were tied in the lead after the third round of competition; just one question ahead of third place.
A special thank you goes out to the TTAC for not only hosting this year’s quiz, but also conducting the pre-quiz sessions that helped to prepare us for the competition. Not going unnoticed in the audience, were the girls from NGHS who supported the team well into the
night. Finally, we wish to express our sincere gratitude to our team’s Alpha Star, our co-ordinator, Ms. Vishalli Tancoo, whose long nights should not be overlooked.
