On Friday 22nd November 2019, a group of NGHS Math enthusiasts from Forms 1 to 6 attended a Math Fair hosted by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine campus.
The Math Fair targeted secondary school students to spark their interest in applications of Mathematics. It allowed students to view Mathematics in an exciting way using various puzzles and logic games to increase their interest in the field and enthusiasm for the various applications of Mathematics in real-life. Students were also informed of the various programmes and research opportunities available at the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST).
The Math Fair also included a number of competitions such as Math Essay, Quiz, Talent and Model. A group of 6 students: Manisha Balkaran, Anusha Saha, Dasha Cummings, Sunella Ramnath, Vinaya Gosine and Sandhya Sookhoo participated in the Math Talent competition which took place on Saturday 16th November 2019. The competition was open to all secondary schools and took the form of an Olympiad-style Math exam which focused on students’ logical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
Sandhya Sookhoo placed 1st in the competition while Vinaya Gosine placed 3rd. They were presented with their awards on the day of the fair.
