On Saturday 29th February, 2020, the Eco-Activist Club of Naparima Girls’ High School attended the Protect and Nurture (PAN) Environmental Fair and Prize Giving Function at the Brazil Secondary School. The Protect and Nurture (PAN) project, co-organised by students and professors from the Widener University, U.S.A and the Asa Wright Nature Centre, was based on the theme, “The Three R’s in Action”.
The Three R’s – Reducing, Reusing and Recycling – were showcased in the Eco-Activist Club’s video presentation, where they outlined the activities they encourage within the school to help the environment. Students: Ashlynn Bridglal, Amaya John- Budhoo, Sophia Ragobar and Nareesa Rampath were able to inform the viewers of past, present and future projects and goals that they set out to continuing achieving.
With the combined effort of the patron teacher of the N.G.H.S. Eco-Activists’ Club, Mrs. Sarsha Lall-Soobrattee; Club President, Sesha Dookeran; Vice President, Sashi Dookeran; Secretary, Maliha Ramnarine-Misir and other members such as Sarah Leonard, videographer and Sariyah Boodhram, who created an informative yet catchy song to accompany the video, their project was awarded first place! This memorable achievement is not just a celebration of their hard work but an encouragement to do more for our environment and continue to push our students to be better Eco-Activists.
At the prize giving function, they were able to interact with other students and share insight into the inner workings of their project and gain helpful information about the great work others are also doing at their respective schools. They also participated in many games and were educated on certain aspects of the environment from organisations such as iCare, EMA, Adopt-a-River, CZITT and many others.
The N.G.H.S. Eco Activists’ Club wishes to sincerely thank Ms. Johanne Ryan of Asa Wright, Mrs. Alisa Gomez of the EMA Enviro Clubs, the Professors and students of Widener University, Mr. Henry Saunders of the GLOBE programme, Dr. Rowena Kalloo of School of Ed. UWI, Ms Patricia McGaw of COPE, Ms. Roshni Madoo of Brazil Secondary School and all the other stakeholders for giving them this wonderful opportunity to participate in this project.
The Principal, Mrs. Carolyn Bally-Gosine, was featured in their video and we wish to sincerely thank her for her input, encouragement and kind words about the contribution the club has made to conserving the environment. Thank you also to the Vice Principal, Mrs. Karen Bally and the Head of the Science Department, Mrs. Karen Bhola-Ramkissoon for participating in the project and encouraging the students to achieve their goals.
We wish to specially commend the Principal, staff and students of Brazil Secondary School for a job well done in bringing together schools and communities to help the environment. We are extremely grateful for their kind hospitality; sincere thanks to them for this memorable day. We hope that this will be the first of many Environmental Fairs in the future.
