Youth Red Cross Update: Powering the passion for humanity

Enrollment of Cadets
Our school’s Red Cross Cadet Group strives to provide opportunities for our students to develop a sense of humanity and commitment to volunteerism. The fulfillment of that mandate was witnessed by our school on December 10th, 2018. Thirteen (13) students joined the ranks of the para military force of Trinidad and Tobago by becoming Youth Cadets of the Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross Society (TTRCS). These young ladies showed their commitment to the cause of the Red Cross by dedicating themselves to several months of preparation and training in First Aid Theory and Practical, Home Nursing, Zika Prevention, History of the Red Cross and  Disaster Management and Preparedness.

The Enrollment Ceremony was ably conducted by Youth Advisor and Former Youth Director of the TTRCS, Gail Austin-Pinder and Commandant Suzanne Bastel of Detachment #18. The cadets were encouraged by the Chairman of the TTRCS Southern Branch, Nigel Williams, to embrace the lifelong commitment and benefits of serving in the Red Cross. The cadets were supported by their parents who proudly stood behind them as they pledged their lives to help the sick and suffering and to uphold the principles of the Red Cross.

Youth Red Cross Cadet Activities
Over the past few months, the enrolled cadets have witnessed and participated in numerous events including the Annual Red Cross Patrons and Cadet Officers Conference at Harry’s Water Park, Tabaquite in March 2019 and the Annual Red Cross Chain Link Gathering at the Center of Excellence, Macoya in May 2019. Members of the Red Cross Club provided assistance to fellow students in need of First Aid during our Sports Day in January 2019 under the guidance of Red Cross personnel. In an effort to commemorate our founder, Henri Dunant’s birthday, the cadets organized a special worship to share on ways to demonstrate humanitarianism. On Sunday 2nd June, 2019, Cadet Sarah Tilkaran of 3N represented us at the National Red Cross Youth in Concert at the Couva Chamber of Commerce. She wowed the audience with her splendid rendition of Lauren Daigle’s song, “You Say”. Youth engagement is a priority of our group.

First Aid Training for Staff
As part of our drive to sensitize members of our school community about the value of First Aid, an intense one day training session was organized for our teachers.  The TTRCS partnered with our school to conduct First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) Training with 28 members of staff on Tuesday 28th May and Wednesday 29th May, 2019.  The sessions were led by the knowledgeable and experienced First Aid Instructors, Iana Bethel and Elizabeth Cornell. The sessions were truly enlightening and memorable. Special thanks to Mr Augustus Forde and Ms Lystra Mahabir for their assistance in organizing these sessions.

Conclusion
The Red Cross Cadet Group Unit #5 of Naparima Girls’ High School continues to provide a platform for students to engage in meaningful activities that fosters leadership, fellowship, volunteerism and humanitarianism.
